Dishonor Code: Rape, Reputation, and Repercussion at UVA

Rape is serious and needs to be taken more seriously by the law. It destroys lives, changes the person for the rest of their lives never quite getting back all they were. Forever changed!

This is a guest post by Willa Hammitt Brown, a doctoral candidate at the University of Virginia, where she is finishing her dissertation, “Gentlemen of the Woods: Manhood, Myth and the American Lumberjack, 1860-1920”. She is a teaching assistant in the Department of History and the Women’s and Gender Studies program.  Content note: this article mentions sexual assault.

“I have worn the honors of Honor

I graduated from Virginia” – :The Honor Men”, James Hay Jr, 1903

“Nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school” – Rolling Stone, 2014

This morning I got an email from the President of my University, the University of Virginia. In it, she quotes Thomas Jefferson, and invokes tradition, honor and idealism. She harks back to the long history of a storied institution. “Honor and tradition inform our thinking,” she explains, but where “success is demanded as much as it is sought” we…

Guilt, Privilege, and Questions I Was Afraid to Ask

We need to better to each other for our world to survive

almost open book

Last night fire swept through the streets

Climbed the walls,

The rugs racism has been swept under,

Heavy.  Burning.

I am white,

And I am guilty.

Of not being brave enough

To sit down with a black mother

Look her in the eye

And ask,

“What does it feel like?”

To be afraid for your babies

Your beautiful children, eyes full of love.

I am a coward,

Because I was afraid of the heaviness

Of letting that pain into my space.

My privilege is the freedom

To acknowledge oppression

Yet decide when I want to have the conversation.

Choosing whether to avoid the discomfort.

Choosing at all.

Maybe change begins

When suffering is so vast

It no longer fits inside human bodies.

When the ugly silence of fear

Is so loud, we can no longer deny it.

And when my heart aches as I look at you

Knowing that your truth…

Riots and Reason

We must respect all rights or we are not the land of the free!

I truly believe that to be a good teacher, a decent writer or a perfunctory scholar one has to concede the limits of evidence, reason, and rationality.

It is no wonder I believe that. Evidence, reason and rationality can rarely explain my place in this world. I know the limits even as I try to stretch them. It is either futile or the human experience or, I suspect, it is both.

For months I have participated and supported the ground work of activists, scholars, teachers, preachers, parents, young people, old people, and people people in Ferguson, MO. My contribution amounts to little more than nil on the grand scale of things. Mostly, I have hoped that people would persist.

It is an unreasonable hope.

Representatives of the State, of a public that includes black people who are also a public, were defiant when they announced the grand jury results of Michael…

Happy Thanksgiving

What a day to start up my site! Hope many love this press I am building here for all those whom are open-minded, alternative and or multi faithful and or just insightful spiritual people who learning new things. I am also a writer whom writes my journey down my theological philosophical alternative multi-faithful path. I also write a lot of poetry and para-preter fiction. I use to go by the pen name Leoparda Moonwater but have stopped using the pen name and now using full birth-married name. So any leopard moonwater fans here where you’ll find me. Also have new facebook too. So been away and the changes but 6+months ago my husband was in tragic car wreck where I nearly lost him and it sort of messed with all I was doing. I realized I am so proud to be his wife that I gave up the pen name. He is doing well now but it could of been a real close call. I knew he was a fighter and reminded my sag every day to come back to me as whole as he could be in his already challenged state. That he couldn’t ever leave his Pisces and he did just that. So never believe all the doctors say for they rarely know what their talking about especially when it comes to things like this. Faith in not only a higher power but the one you love for if they have no reason to fight there way back then there is no much the higher power or powers can do.
Hope all had a great Thanksgiving and will have more soon for Yall. Bless’d be!!!!!!!
